Q&A
Q: OMG, what happened to your hair?
A: There was a global pandemic.
Q: Is that a bathroom-mirror selfie with no makeup and your shower curtain as a backdrop?
A: It is.
Q: But...why didn't you get new professional shots taken?
A: There was a global pandemic. (But isn't the professional shot lovely? Natalia Dotto is amazing.)
Q: Okaaaay, but does this mean you're secretly old and go to bed at, like, ten o'clock?
A: I mean, I get in bed at ten o'clock, but then I read for an hour. Also I wake up early to write which is the secret to productivity.
Q: Do you not know about hair dye?
A: Yeah, but I'm going for it. Aging naturally and all that shit.
Q: For my bookclub/school assignment/curiosity, I need to know about more than your hair.
A: There is nothing more to know than my hair.
Q: Really?
A: Well, under Bits & Pieces up there, you'll find some personal essays. On the About page, you'll find some nuts and bolts. I grew up in Maryland, did my undergrad in Virginia, went to graduate school in Delaware, taught college in Baltimore, Maryland and Tacoma, Washington, and currently live in Seattle on a really, really steep hill with my husband, daughter, and border collie whose hair is even whiter than mine now is. I write in the mornings and afternoons, read in the morning, afternoon, evening, and night, and sleep way too little.
Q: Your dog is really cute.
A: I know. It's ridiculous.
Q: Was it the stress of walking her up and down the hill every day that made your hair turn gray?
A: Almost certainly.
